For Lara Lu, knitwear has always been both craft and playground. The Chinese-American designer, now based in New York, currently designs knitwear for Coach’s ready-to-wear line. Before that, she shaped knits at Rachel Comey and launched her own label, Unir, which gained recognition for delicate craftsmanship and an organic design philosophy, finding its way into international boutiques.
Her early work leaned into the poetic—the act of knitting felt like quiet whispers or small dances. As her practice expanded, so did her references, moving from intimate explorations to broader, more playful registers. At Coach’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection, she let rubber ducks and Popeye slip into the stitches, turning pop symbols into motifs of American style. It was a reminder that knitwear, in her hands, can carry humor as easily as it does tradition.
Her collaboration with Fabrique extends this dialogue. Inspired by vintage one-of-a-kind pieces, the collection highlights bold graphics, vivid color, and a mix of knit techniques that strike a balance between nostalgia and present-day ease. “I hope this series brings practical ease, playful fun, nostalgic gentleness, and a sense of the present,” she says. And with that, Lara Lu brings knitwear into sharper focus—energetic, inventive, and very much alive.
