Kain Picken and Fiona Lau founded FFIXXED STUDIOS in Hong Kong in 2012. Picken, a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne, and Lau, who studied fashion at RMIT, first collaborated in Berlin before establishing their brand. Their educational background in art and fashion design informs their unique approach to clothing.
The duo's work quickly gained industry recognition. In 2012, they won the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest. They followed this with the International Woolmark Prize for womenswear in 2013, showcasing their skill with natural fibers. In 2015, Vogue Italia selected them for Vogue Talents, highlighting their potential on a global stage. Their debut at Shanghai Fashion Week in 2016 resulted in the Best Original Design award, cementing their reputation in the Asian market. FFIXXED STUDIOS also received the Italian Y.E.S. Eco-Fashion Award for the Asian region, acknowledging their use of natural fibers and personalized production methods to reduce environmental impact.
Major fashion publications including Vogue, BOF, and ELLE have featured FFIXXED STUDIOS' work. Celebrities such as Chen Shu, Zhang Zifen, Zhang Yixing, and Chen Xuedong have worn their designs, increasing the brand's visibility. In 2018, Fashion Asia named Picken and Lau among the "Top 10 Asian Designers to Watch." The name "FFIXXED" represents their design philosophy: unrestricted by location and combining modern cuts with unconventional aesthetics. Picken and Lau describe their style as comfortable and casual, integrating sustainable practices into their design process.
