Inspiration

For Aimee Stroud, the Fabrique collaboration begins with a single flower and a patch of sunlight. Working in handmade sun-prints on expired photo paper, she lets shadows from curled petals and jagged sepals settle into their own tonal depth, so each single-toned image reads less like a photograph and more like a record of the flower growing.

Most print designs start with a paintbrush or Procreate on Ipad. Aimee Stroud starts with a flower and a patch of sunlight. Her signature technique is a handmade sun-print process, cruder and slower than even a basic box camera, where she sets a single bloom on light-sensitive paper and just waits for daylight to do the work. No sketching, no mixing colors, no camera shutter. Just the flower, the paper, and time.
That habit of working outside the sketchbook goes back to her training at Central Saint Martins. It carried her through print design roles at Alexander McQueen and then Calvin Klein, and into a consulting job on print for Off-White — three labels that don't have much in common except needing someone who actually understands pattern, not just decoration.
Where a lot of designers push their own ideas onto a piece, Stroud tends to do the opposite: she pays attention to what the flower and the light are already doing, and lets that lead. Now working out of Amsterdam, she treats the whole practice less like design and more like tending something — the end result, in her case, is a garden that's entirely her own.
